Why Give Cheren a Patrat?!

If there was anything I could say that was an oddball in the previous Pokemon Black and White game, it's got to be Cheren. Yeah, the intelligent - looking guy who seemingly knows a lot and vows to be a Pokemon champion. Alas he was defeated. But it doesn't stop him in chasing his dreams so now, in Pokemon lack and White 2, Cheren is now a gym leader. But something bugs me:

Yeah, a gym leader. A kind of homage, possibly, to Blue (or yeah, you can call him Gary Oak,) who was once a champion but then defeated, and then re-emerge from that loss to become the Viridian City Gym leader. Quite a connection? Sort of. But while Gary's Pokemon team, when we face him, is a powerhouse (that Pidgeot and Blastoise,) I kind of not understand why Cheren was given a low level Pokemon team. And it looks to me that he'll be one of the first (if not the one) gym leaders you'll be facing, which guarantees the low level of his Pokemon. Still, the guy-who-wants-to-be-champion should have been given a better stage to put his Pokemon team on.

It should also be a powerhouse, like Gary Oak's. Because for a rival, Cheren got the most personality than any rival there was in any previous Pokemon game. (Don't count Gary Oak, since his persona was pretty much attached to the anime.) He's smart. He values friendship. And he admits mistakes. Doesn't he deserve to battle the new Pokemon trainer way late in the game so that he'll have a powerhouse team?

He does. And he doesn't deserve a low-level Patrat!

But of course, the game is pretty much a few weeks from now. We'll know which is which when it comes out. Stay tuned!

Do you have a favorite rival in the Pokemon games? What about in the anime?
