Blame it on Monster Hunter 3G, I say. Capcom's financial report for last year includes a large chunk of data of its sales via geographical region. It revealed that a huge amount of sales came from Japan. And the reason? Monster Hunter 3G - which, sold 1.6 million units there.
In the data which I found at Andriasang. It seems that Capcom is also planning to merge its Consumer Online Games Division and Mobile Content into one - naming it Digital Content Division. This is largely because of the changing market according to them.
Interestingly enough, Capcom's Mobile Division earns the most money last year, more than its other businesses. Yes more than the company's Consumer Online Games Divison, which is also responsible for standard video game releases.
Capcom's Plan?
Apart from merging its two businesses, Capcom plans to shorten the development period of all its games - all to reduce production cost. Another one is to extend the life cycle of its core products by continually releasing downloadable content to those games.
I can almost imagine an Ace Attorney game continually supported with DLC cases. :P |
While I am not a fan of what Capcom does to promote their DLCs, I think its a feasible idea (in a business standpoint) to release downloadables in an extended period of time so that the interest for the game will continue, and people who haven't bought will buy because there is still support.
What worries me though is that perhaps, if Capcom milks their games so much via these DLCs, will the consumers who bought it eventually get tired? Or perhaps lose money that they can actually use to buy other Capcom games? Of course we can argue that the consumer will use the money he saves to buy games that are not from Capcom, so persuading them to like and buy these DLCs can ensure that the consumer will continually support the company...
Ack, I'm wayyy far to overreaching here... What do you think about Capcom's plan regarding their future downloadable content? Hit up the comments below. :P
